Fine and Roderick A. Borrie, Ph.D., conducted a study on REST therapy and found that the effects of flotation therapy clearly indicate how powerful relaxation can be in healing the body (by their own conclusions). The authors examined patients who had mostly been experiencing chronic pain for greater than 6 months. Upper back pain was reduced in 63.6% of cases.

           A fibromyalgia study from 2012 assessed the responses of 81 patients who went through three flotation sessions. The vast majority of participants reported an improvement in their sense of wellness and a decrease in pain after finishing the therapy. Additionally, their amount of pain continued to decrease throughout the three sessions; the reported average pain rating was lower prior to entry for the 2nd and 3rd floats.

           Performance in the arts and athletics could also be improved by flotation therapy. The primary metric of the GBD is the disability-adjusted life year (DALY), which takes into account both years lost to health issues and premature death related to various conditions. In 2010, the GBD analysis found that neck pain was ranked fourth as a source of disability.            The typical adult human head weighs about 10 pounds. Picture taking a bowling ball that weighs 10 pounds and securing it to the top of a stick. The stick would be able to support the ball’s weight when it is perpendicular to the ground. However, if you start to tilt it gradually toward the ground, the stick would lose integrity, ultimately bending and cracking.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           The reason the stick becomes compromised is because a weight at the top of a column will exert greater pressure on the column when it is leaning.

           Now think again of your head – applying the same concept. Researchers became interested in the specific effect of leaning forward, as occurs during mobile-device use, related to neck pain. The study, published in Surgical Technology International, determined that the cervical spine and its supportive muscles would have to withstand 27 pounds of force when an average head leans forward only 15 degrees. The findings show that the operation was “no better than… supervised exercise and therapy,” writes Kolata. Despite this ineffectiveness, spinal fusion surgery numbers rose through 2012, when the insurers stopped paying for it.

           Fascia is one of the soft tissue structures that can tighten and cause hip pain. Fascia is similar to tendons, but instead of being shaped like a cord, it’s formed as a thin sheet of tissue that surrounds skeletal muscle and permeates every structure in the body. According to John F. Barnes, PT, an international lecturer that has taught over 100,000 physicians and therapists about myofascial release, tightening of fascia can actually produce tensile pressure of up to thousands of pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures.
